SALON SHOPTALK 101
10:05 AMWhen it comes to hair color services, sometimes it can seem like your stylist is talking a whole new language. Ombre...balayage...toner...base buster? What does it even mean?
Well have no fear, we've defined all the terms below to give you the inside scoop:
COLOR SERVICES
single process color: a single process color is a roots only application used to cover greys and re-growth.
single process color + ends: a single process color applied to the roots and pulled through the ends.
partial highlight vs. full highlight: a partial highlight is applied to the hairline and crown of the head (if you were to pull you hair half up, that is the part that would be highlighted), while a full highlight includes the whole head.
toner: typically applied at the shampoo bowl to add shine and give the hair a cooler or warmer tone.
gloss: all over clear color applied to the hair for extra shine and vibrancy. it can be done in-between color appointments or applied to the ends of hair when only roots need coverage.
base buster: a high-lifting mixture applied to the roots to break up and lighten the base of a blonde.
color correction: anytime you are drastically changing the hair color...either to fix an at-home dye job gone wrong or to create a completely new look.
balayage: also known as "hair painting," because highlights are literally painted on the hair. this french technique helps to achieve natural-looking, sun-kissed strands.
ombre: literally translated to gradation, this technique involves a fading of color from dark to light. instead of color being placed at the root, it is blended in mid-shaft to create a more natural grown-out look.
COLOR TERMS
cool: shades that have more blue tones...think ash or champagne.
warm: shades that have more red or golden tones...think honey, caramel or copper.
neutral: in-between a cool and warm tone. neutrals are great for covering grey hair.
level: a measurement of lightness or darkness, typically on a scale of 2-12. 2 being the darkest black and 12 being white or platinum.
dimension: a combination of varied tones, levels and shines
brassy: a term used for hair that is too gold or yellow-looking after a lightening service. it is can be controlled by counteracting the warmth with a cool toner.
MISC. TERMS
filler: a product added to the hair prior to coloring to fill in and equalize the differences in areas of damaged hair for an even color result.
demi-permanent: demi-permanaent color rests on top of the hair cuticle, kind of like lipstick on your lips. it is a more translucent color but is great for blending greys, enhancing natural color and toning highlights. it typically fades out after 24 washes.
permanent: permanent dye replaces the natural hair pigment. it creates rich, vibrant color and offers 100% grey coverage.
virgin hair: hair that has been untouched by color. it can refer to hair that has never been colored before or re-growth.
